Event Details

On Saturday May 18th 2019, concerned citizens all across the world will be joining hands for 15 minutes to say no to dirty fuels and yes to clean energy, This is not only an opportunity of global and national importance but a local one for all Floridians. Although, the president said Florida would be exempt from oil drilling off the coast, it was announced later by Interior Secretary Zinke the he was expanding plans for drilling and exploration which could include the coasts of Florida. By participating in Hands Across the Sand concerned citizens have an opportunity to gather and become active in helping change our world energy policies to ensure a sustainable planet.

This event will fall during the 90 public comment period that is required when Trump releases the federal offshore drilling plan. That will be within the next 2 weeks, according to our intel in D.C.. There are serious environmental impacts associated with each stage of offshore oil drilling. Seismic Surveys or blasting which entail high decibel noises disturbs or kills marine life and spoil fisheries. Oil spills can ruin entire ecosystems which take numerous years to clean up, for example Exon Valdez and the Deepwater Horizon spills. Lastly, offshore drilling can economically affect coastal areas as it impacts tourism, recreation and the fishing industries.

Come join us as we gather and join hands on Saturday May 18, 2019 at noon on the beach just south of the Jacksonville Beach Pier. Address of the Pier is 503 1st Street North Jacksonville Beach Florida. Check in starts at 11:00 a.m. We can send a powerful visual message of solidarity by making a line in the sand.
